Jonas De Cooman is one of the co-founders of Spott. Together with Michel De Wachter they started Spott in 2015. Michel and Jonas got to know each other as volunteers in the non-profit organization YouBridge that Jonas founded in 2008. When they first met in Oeganda, they both had a job in big corporates: Jonas worked as European Senior Brand Manager at Coca Cola and Michel as Head Strategic & Transversal Communication at BNP Paribas Fortis.
They started talking about what they could accomplish if they had their own business. What they could do more for a good cause if they had a successful business.
They launched a sports experience app but that didn’t turn out the way they hoped. Thanks to this adventure they learned a lot about the willingness to pay because it has no use to keep pushing something that has little value and where people aren’t willing to pay for. In February 2014 the first demo of Spott was born and they pitched for Medialaan. The promise they made was: Spott. Watch. Click. Discover.
Jonas and Michel are what you call a complimentary duo. The inspiration they got in Oeganda resulted in a friendship, trust and entrepreneurship. They both put the interest of the company first, even if it meant that one of them needed to be the ‘chief in charge’. They put their ego aside and always put the best interest of the company first.
But what makes their story unique is that they are both not entrepreneurs pur sang. Jonas is a marketer and Michel a product developer. But because of talking to people and sharing their idea, they got to know people who helped them with their struggles. They believe that having focus is crucial to become an international company.
