Mark van der Heijden is a creative entrepreneur from Amsterdam. After 6 years working in advertising, he quit his job to travel the world. From January 2014 til January 2016 he traveled the world as ‘The Backpacker Intern’. He worked for advertising agencies, brands and good causes and all of this without asking a financial compensation. All he wanted was to trade: a day of work = a day with food and an overnight stay. His mission was to gain work experience on 7 different continents and to inspire people with his story, on the go and online.
Mark received a lot of international media exposure with his project. Within one week time, he received over more than 750 job offers from all over the world. And now, 2 years later, Mark has been on 7 continents, 27 countries and worked for 32 companies. From Amnesty International Thailand, DDB Vietnam, TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles, till JWT Buenos Aires, Red Bull Austria en Ogilvy Cape Town. He even worked with the legendary ‘hit’ maker Nike Rodgers in New York but also helpend ex drug traffickers in the favelas of Rio The Janeiro, a dog shelter in San Francisco, brought food to homeless people in Malaysia and even joined a One Ocean Polar Expedition to Antartica.
Mark already gave lots of inspiring keynotes about his adventures at TEDx, SXSW, Cannes Lions Festival, the main office of the United Nations and more than 50 events worldwide. As a speaker he inspires people to live a life filled with experiences and to overcome barriers and objections. His personal mantra is “Think less, do more.”
After this unforgettable journey filled with learnings, experiences and networking Mark started Wanderbrief: a platform that helps people to travel the world while working as a ‘Digital Nomad’. They match freelancers, entrepreneurs and remonte workers with 100% independent jobs and an international community with over more dan 8000 traveling professionals from over 100 countries. The creed of Mark and Wanderbrief can be summarized with the following quote: “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” – Oprah.
